As they run through arenas and open fields, past mountains and seas, moving like the wind toward heaven, we travel with them, if only in our hearts.

Cowboy Olympics,
Sutherland Springs, Texas

May your belly never grumble,
May your heart never ache,
May your horse never stumble,
May your cinch never break.

Working Day

I want free life and I want fresh air;
And I sigh for the canter after the cattle,
The crack of the whips like shots in a battle,
The medley of horns and hooves and heads.

~ Frank Desprez, "Lasca"

Portraits

When Spring opened and the South Wind blew over new grass and nectared flowers , he inhaled the air with a gusto and exhaled it in elated whinneyings now delicate, now expansive that plainly bespoke enjoyment of the earth's fragrance.

~ J Frank Dobie, The Mustangs

Cheyenne Frontier Days

A cowboy climbed aboard a bronc, which commenced to buck. The bronc threw one particular buck that caused the cowboy to lose his stirrups while, at the same time, the bronc caught a hind leg in one of the stirrups. Whereupon the cowboy went flying out of the saddle. When the onlookers asked the cowboy what had happened, he replied, "Well, boys, when I looked down and saw that bronc's foot in the stirrup, I said to myself, "Hell, if he's gettin' on, I'd better get off!"

Wyobraska Championship Ranch Rodeo

Rodeoing is about the only sport you can't fix. You'd have to talk to the bulls and horses, and they wouldn't understand you.
